Nephrology Clinic

Nephrology is the medical speciality which focuses on the treatment of kidney conditions and abnormalities

Scope of the speciality

Nephrology concerns the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, including electrolyte disturbances and hypertension to the care of those requiring renal replacement therapy, including dialysis and renal transplant patients. Many diseases affecting the kidney are systemic disorders that are not limited to the organ itself and it may require special treatment.

Conditions requiring a nephrologist

Patients are refered to nephrology specialists for various reasons, such as:

  • Acute renal failure.
  • Chronic kidney disease.
  • Hematuria.
  • Proteinuria.
  • Kidney stones.
  • Hypertension that has failed to respond to multiple forms of anti-hypertensive medication.
  • Electrolyte disorders or acid/base imbalance.

Laboratory tests are mostly aimed at: serum urea, creatinine, electrolytes, and urinalysis, which is frequently the key test in suggesting a diagnosis.
